Susan M. Smartt, Ph.D.

Susan M. Smartt, Ph.D., served as a member of the U.S. Department of Education Reading First Review Panel. She has worked as a classroom teacher, reading specialist and tutor, school psychologist, teacher trainer, and consultant to numerous state departments of education and local education agencies. She worked on the professional staff of the Child Study Center of the John F. Kennedy Center at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College. Dr. Smartt was principal and later director of education at the Vanderbilt Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Hospital at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She has coauthored articles in national professional publication s that focus on early literacy intervention. For the past 18 years, she has co-owned and directed a reading clinic, Smartt, Johnson, and Associates, concentrating primarily on dyslexia, speech and language disorders, and related learning difficulties. Dr. Smartt is past president of the Tennessee Branch of the International Dyslexia Association. She is a nationally certified LETRS and DIBELS trainer and provides workshops throughout the country.
