    I have used REWARDS for a number of years. It provides an easy-to-use strategy students can rely on. The students also get enough repetition for mastery. It's also relatively quick. Many approaches take years. REWARDS has 25 lessons that may be completed in a matter of months if you have the time to teach it! The vocabulary component is also very important.

    I have been teaching the REWARDS program for the past 7 years and the D.O. jokes I own stock in the company - I'm that enthusiastic about it. It goes back to basic phonics skills; but not as "a" as in cat, but "a" as in magnificent. It gives students the tools to decode multisyllabic words rather than rely on the notoriously unreliable look-panic-guess strategy most struggling readers use.

    Cons- I received training from Sopris West. Colleagues who have tried the program without the training have not felt successful teaching it. Also, it takes a lot of energy to enliven the material that works because it is repetitive, but can also seem dry for that same reason.

    Rewards is proving to be an excellent approach to a sticky problem of having students practice decoding multi-syllabic words.

    I didn't write the headline. It's a quote from one of my students, a 7th grader who has a learning disability in reading and writing. I am a former special ed. teacher and principal and now have a private tutoring service. Matt's parents brought him to me as he was so frustrated with academics and lacked motivation. Within 3 sessions of working in Rewards, Matt was off and running with wanting to improve his reading. HE asked me to write to the publishers to let them know how much he enjoyed the program and to be sure and state that "this was from a kid who didn't like to read. Matt is now in college, and I have continued to use Rewards with several of my students who work as eagerly as Matt did in the program. The photo is a picture of Matt and I at his graduation party.

    I have used this product in the past so I know its effectiveness in helping children decode words with affixes as well as learn crucial phonics skills. The built-in review is particularly helpful in establishing retention in long term memory.
