Joseph K. Torgesen, Ph.D.

Joseph K. Torgesen received his Ph.D. in developmental and clinical psychology from the University of Michigan in 1976. He is currently appointed as Distinguished Research Professor of Psychology and Education at Florida State University. He has been conducting research with children who have learning problems for 25 years and has authored over 140 articles, book chapters, books, and tests related to reading and learning disabilities. He also serves on the editorial boards of five research journals. For the past 12 years, Torgesen has been part of the effort supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to learn more about the nature of reading disabilities and ways to prevent and remediate reading problems in children. For the past five years, he has been actively involved in trying to help teachers and other professionals incorporate findings from recent research into classroom practice.
