Daniel Johnston

Dan Johnston has worked as a psychiatric social worker, a remedial teacher, and an English as a Second Language teacher in Tokyo, among other jobs. During graduate school he became intrigued with the idea of putting Direct Instruction on the computer. He spent several years as the lead instructional designer of an Internet-based, individualized middle school math program that is now used by schools nationwide. In controlled studies, students who used the program significantly outscored their peers on state and national tests, in some cases by as much as 2 standard deviations in one school year.
